Different Styles of Insulation Boards

Tongue and Groove Boards

One of the biggest challenges faced by insulation manufacturers is air leakage. This typically occurs at the edges of insulation boards, whether that be due to compression or poor installation. Tongue and groove boards are designed to combat this by ensuring there are no gaps where two boards join. They feature precision cut slots on the edges, allowing homeowners and tradespeople to easily slot the boards together.

Tapered Edge Boards

If you need to apply scrim or joint fillers to the edges of your insulation, you’ll benefit from tapered edge insulation boards. These are slightly thinner at the edges, allowing them to be dry-lined whilst maintaining a smooth and consistent surface. This feature is typically found on insulated plasterboards, which combines PIR insulation with plasterboard for fast and easy installation by both homeowners and tradespeople.

Squared Edge Boards

Many insulation boards don’t feature grooved or tapered edges as these are not necessarily the best solution for larger projects. Those that lack any form of slots are referred to as squared edge boards. Whilst they are vulnerable to air leakage if installed incorrectly, they are quicker and easier to fit in most circumstances.
