What is Felt Made Of?

Roofing felt has come on leaps and bounds since its inception in 19^th Century California, where it was used as a low-cost waterproofing solution. Roofing felt is generally composed of two primary elements, known as the base and the carrier.

The base is usually made from either natural or synthetic materials such as cellulose fibres or fibreglass, which is then saturated in waterproof bitumen known as the “carrier”. The carrier is what lends roof felt its weatherproof properties along with its ability to breathe effectively.

How Much Roofing Felt Do I Need?

The amount of felt you’ll need to cover your roof will naturally depend on its size. For example, if you’re just looking to re-roof a standard 4x6 garden shed, all you should need is one 1x8m roll of felt.

To calculate how much felt you’ll need, first measure the width and length of your structure at ground level. Then, multiply this figure by around 1.25 – 1.4 depending on how steep the pitch of the roof is. Finally, tack on an additional 10% to account for wastage. You should now know how many rolls you’ll need.

Roofing felt is a fantastic roofing material for achieving a durable, weatherproof finish on outbuildings such as garden sheds or garages. Known for its cost-effectiveness and simple installation, roof felt is a very popular way to protect garden buildings with flat or pitched roofs from the elements.

Traditional roof felt is a great option for DIYers thanks to its easy installation and can be used on new structures, as a roof replacement, or even to add an additional layer over your existing roofing material.

Types of Roof Felt

There are three main types of roofing felt to choose from, each of these has various benefits and advantages that make them suitable for different applications. There will be several things to consider before making your choice, the main ones being whether you are going to install the roof yourself and the size of the roof you need to cover.

Torch-on Felt

Welded onto the roof with a blow torch, the three-layered torch-on felt creates an outstanding waterproof seal. The three layers are made up from a vapour control sheet, reinforced felt and a cap sheet with a mineral finish.

While one of the most common flat roofing materials, it can also be dangerous to install. The use of the blow torch in the installation process means that when roofing with this material, it is best to get a professional with roofing experience to install it.

Hiring a roofer for this type of job will be, on average, around £750 - £850 for a typical single garage. Torch-on felt is designed to last for 15 – 25 years.

Building regulations in the UK stipulate that you must use a torch-on roofing material if the area you are covering will be inhabited. For sheds and garages, only two are needed.

Self-adhesive Felt

Ideal for applications where a blow torch is not practical or naked flames are prohibited, self-adhesive sheets have a film on one side that peels away, making them easy to apply with little skill.

This type of felt is a great choice for covering the roof of smaller projects such as domestic garages, flat roofs and porches. If you’re planning to install the felt yourself, consider this roofing material above the others, it’s cost-effective, durable and very tough.

Shed Felt

Specially designed for use on sheds and garden buildings, shed felt is available in both torch-on and self-adhesive roof felts. Designed to perfectly complement a garden aesthetic, it will look at home on top of any garden building and provides all of the advantages of the weather-proof material.

When installing shed felt, you’ll need to use nails no matter which type you go for. This is because the bitumen will expand in warm weather and contract in cold, and the nails allow the felt to stay in place while this natural movement occurs, ensuring that it doesn’t crack.
